The best way to keep sin at a distance is to make sure Jesus stands between you and temptation.

When we turn our eyes toward Jesus, He becomes a powerful reminder that our old life “died, and our life is hidden with Christ in God”.

"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator." Colossians 3:5-10

whatever is holy, whatever is pure. those are the traits of which we desire to have in ourselves.
i remember someone once told me that getting upset with people smoking, gambling, drinking and swearing or struggling with a habit is kinda pointless. because such habits people possess are hard to change and they are not the root of the problem. No matter how hard one may explain to hem that it is wrong. some might be offended by the approach we are taking and this will draw them away form God even more. But, the answer is this. when we put Jesus on the throne of our lives, those habits will die gradually but surely. and it kinda make sense to me too.
